Laura and I (Laura) have read that post titled "5 things you should know before dating a scientist" and we knew that we should write a female version... because it was only to dating scientist men...
1. We are not easily impressed. No matter if you have “Johnny Depp’s face” or if you study a lucrative career at a prestigious university. We don’t need to know the list of girls you went out or the ones that are crazy about you. If you want to impress us, you have to demonstrate intelligence, dedication and passion for what you do. We want to go out with someone we can admire. Having a good CV gives points. We like mysteries, but they must be interesting.
2. We are looking for more than a pretty face. We are people who seek knowledge, read books, and it is interesting to know what your partner thinks. We seek intelligent and interesting men that can follow our talks. Yes, usually we fall for cute kids but there's nothing sexier than a guy who knows where to find a paper that is not available.
3. Economic independence. Pocket does not interest to us, we are independent enough to live without you. We like to get our stuff, any gift made with love and dedication is well received. We do not need flowers, but chocolates "All you need is love. But a little chocolate now and then Does not hurt." as Lucy Van Pelt says.
4. You are not less important than work, work is more important than anything else. Because is not only a work, working hours do not end at five in the afternoon. It's a lifestyle that demands absolute dedication. It was not something we chose because was easy or lucrative, but because it is exciting, therefore always it will be the priority. Do not worry, you'll have your place if you know how to inspire us.
5. We like to experiment. This indicates that we do not like the monotony, we're willing to let ourselves be tempted by some assumptions and given the arguments we are going to test, draw conclusions and improve the protocols. We do not give a "No" without argument and everything is always on until proven otherwise. We know things can go wrong, but we value to negative results.
6. We are gypsies, science changes every day ... and also we must be always well informed, we cross frontiers to study abroad, going to conferences in different cities and countries, do internships at different labs, we speak in other languages, we have friends in different parts of the world and you decide, are you going to stay or are you going to come?
7. We like science, but also the art. Contrary to popular belief, science is not something cold and hard. A scientist knows how to wonder and shudder are the things you find in your laboratory. It is not only knowledge, we also admire the beauty of all there is to discover, and enjoy while trying to find out. Those same feelings of admiration are found in art, in a good piece of music, in a book or a movie.
8. Everything we do, we do it with passion and dedication. Certainly we did not choose this way of life for money, it is clear that we chose because we love what we do and so we are in everything. The guy that we like ... we love ... and we give our best to our relationship for it to be beautiful and durable. We take care of alternating variables and we never lack passion.
9. My friends are your friends ... but they too are nerds like me. If you want to get out with us, sooner or later you will also come out with our friends. You will have a statistically significant guaranteed fun, but you'd better know what the meaning of “statistical significance” is. And get ready for constant use of scientific terms and discussions of the work area overnight.
